this event was won by
chris warbrick
Blundells Hill saw some tricky conditions with stiff breezes and pretty persistent rain showers. However, Chris did not let this hamper his round to take the top spot.
Some delightful work with the driver and 3 wood left Chris in prime positions to score well and tidy work around the greens just helped maximise this further. A course that requires as much thought as brute force was taken apart by some superb golf and an excellent winning score of 37 Stableford points. Congratulations to our event winner, Chris Warbrick. |

Our third event of the 2015 saw us head to Blundells Hill Golf Club on a blustery Saturday morning - not ideal conditions for a renowned tight course. The weather was also let down by passing showers throughout the whole round and therefore to stand a chance of winning, the players had to be on top of their game.
Blundells Hill is a well thought out course that doesn't take to kindly to people attacking holes with the big stick and therefore you need to plot your way around taking long irons and fairway woods off the tees on many an occasion. The course on the day was generally in great condition - and like most courses at the moment, it appears about a month behind where it should be due to the cold spring we've had so far.
The greens had recently been hollowtined but still played quick and slick and were generally a pleasure to putt on. There are lots of subtle undulations and they require respect and a good eye to read them well. The fairways and rough were well maintained and defined and were a pleasure to play from and the bunkers were all well stocked and raked - which was great to see.
The course is protected by plenty of internal out of bounds, trees and foliage and well placed bunkers and water hazards and only serves to highlight how accuracy is paramount to score well.
In summary, the course is definitely worthy of anyones green fees and the humongous burger and chips and bowls of scouse that the lads scoffed in the club house afterwards were superb value and very tasty.

Group 2 - Andy Roper, John Standley, Allan Gannon & Ben Warden
Group 2 had a case of "what if" and "maybe" as there was large spells of good golf, spoilt by the odd bad hole and fair share of unlucky breaks.
John Standley will be happy with his overall days play with some nice all round play, but must feel like he left a few shots on the course as a few over hit approach shots resulted in lost balls and dropped shots, and a couple of drives drifted right into the trees to leave him chopping out. However, it was a very solid performance in tricky conditions. Most amusing moment of his round was seeing him attempt to make up for lost points by taking a 3 wood from a bunker that had a high front lip on in the 18th fairway. The look of surprise on his face as it flew like a rocket into the face of the bunker and out backwards was a picture.
Allan Gannon had more hooks than a curtain shop as his tee shots continually snapped left into mostly unplayable areas. Its therefore a miracle of monumental proportions that he managed to score as well as he did. This was courtesy of some sweet iron play and tidy work from 150 yards and in. A beautiful tee shot on the par 3 12th hole saw him stiff it within 8 feet to take the nearest the pin on a very tough green with a tricky pin location.
Ben Warden had a solid round but will probably be thinking it could have been so much better if it wasn't for the odd poor shot sprinkled in between the lovely drawn tee shots and the well struck irons. The greens also posed a bit of an issue in parts with a few putts coming up short. However, a superb tee shot on 16 and a great approach shot left him 6 feet from the pin to nail him the nearest the pin in 2 shots.
Andy Roper enjoyed a solid afternoon, other than for 3 holes in the middle of the round. The nearest the pin at 12 saw his ball bounce on a mound beside the green - 12 feet from the pin - and bolt forwards off the slop and into the out of bounds. This seemed to get into his head and it took 3 holes to get him back on track. He will feel a few putts were left out on the course that in all probability would have given him the win on the day - but thats golf for you! Diddums!!!
Group 3 - Steve Bradshaw, Paul Scally, Rob Botterill & Scott Seddon

the course
Blundells Hill Golf Club was founded in 1994 and is located less than 5 minutes from junction 7 of the M62.
The course is set in mature parkland with views that take one’s breath away on a clear day. The elevated clubhouse overlooks a panoramic vista stretching from the hills of Frodsham to the Welsh mountains.
The course caters for all abilities, though accuracy is paramount; a real thinker’s delight. Many fairways are tree-lined and the green side bunkers can pose a serious obstacle. The competition tees offer a real challenge as do the five par 3’s which, if the wind blows, can play havoc with your club selection. The water features add hesitation, as do the large and undulating greens.
