The opening Major of the 2015 was fiercely contested, but ultimately one player stood out from the pack.
Having been docked 3 shots since the last event, he felt the tide may be against him to score well at Dunham Forest. However, a superb knock of 37 points on a tricky, tight course was enough to claim the victory and the round was sealed by his 2nd hole-in-one in 7 months with a lovely 6 iron on the par 3 8th. Into a stiff breeze, one bounce and in and Kevin was celebrating another superb achievement. Well done. |
the official review of the day:
The first Major of the 2015 season was The Bunkers Masters, and the lads went across to Dunham Forest Golf Club in Altrincham. A course that not many of the group had heard of, let alone played, but the committee had a secret weapon up their sleeves having test run this wonderful venue in early December 2014 - and they knew then that it would hold up to all expectations in the spring.
The course is tucked away off the main roads and would be easily missed if it wasn't for one sign that lets you know you are close. On arrival, you are greeted by a grand looking club house and everything looks in tip top shape. From the pro shop to the bar area, things here are just done properly.
The course meanders through woodland and parkland and for large swathes of it, you can fall into the perception that you are the only people on it as each hole seems more secluded from the last. Its a clever use of the landscape and gives this place a but of a special feel to it.
The course is immaculate - make no mistake about it. The fairways are cut tight and are well defined and the tee boxes and bunkers are all well cared for [as they should be]. The highlight of the course though has to be the greens. The committee visited on 1st December and they were sublime then, but on this visit they were quick, true and inspired good golf.
Lets see how the lads got on....
There was some last minute jiggling of the groups as Phil Williams' baby was staying put to allow its daddy the chance to play and so the groups were jostled about on the first tee to fit everyone in.
Group 1 - Allan Gunn, Chris Berry and John Morrison:
First group out was decided with minutes to spare as Evo Jnr had been caught short and was engaged delivery a parcel. It was therefore Chris Berry's honour to lead the society out - and he now knows how Lloydy felt at every event, with the big stick in hand his drive was away, nowhere near the fairway and landing on the 2nd green behind some trees (obviously no pressure then).
New member this year coming from the Grimshaw was John Morrison and in fitting with most of his round he thinned his opening drive 2 foot off the floor but down the middle. Next up was Allan "The metronome" Gunn fresh off his cruise to victory at Formby Ladies however the handicap reduction had got to his head and his opening drive went right into the trees.
The group soon realised that unless they thought about each tee shot they would be spending all afternoon in the trees. On to the 3rd hole and the first of the par 3's and Bunkers mini comp for the day. Chris and Allan failed to even carry the green let alone the flag but John hit a nice shot just left of the flag and rolled his birdie putt in for a nice 2 (advantage Morrison)
As the group made their way round the front 9 none of them making a charge for the jacket and the course really opened up a bit leading to a few wayward drives as the shoulders were let loose, Reasonable scores were posted for the first 9 holes and all 3 were still in with a chance, especially as none of them were firing on all cylinders.
The back 9 made it's way towards the under ground reservoir and seemed to circle around it. John still struggling to get his ball off the deck was then let down by his putter; this leaving him in a mild panic about picking up the wooden spoon. Allan had a little run going a took the lead after the par 3 13th with a lovely tee shot just left of the flag unfortunately missing his putt for the 2.
The 14th was a long par 5 alongside the reservoir and Allan and John seemed to cope with the tight tee shot however Chris decided to play Robin Hood and then just walk the rest of the hole after hacking into the overgrowth.
The 16th hole lead them to the top of the reservoir with a blind tee shot over the top, the chairman had told a bold lie at the start saying the marker post was the line to aim your tee shot at resulting in me going in the trees on the left of the fairway (thanks Andy, thanks). After John had been over watching a couple having a "romantic" moment near the 15th green he hit his best drive of the day 20 yards right of the "marker" which turned out to be slap bang in the middle of the fairway with only a flick left to the green, unfortunately his flick went through the back of the green, a problem lots of members seemed to have throughout the day with the course being very dry for the time of year.
The 17th and 18th holes led the group back to the clubhouse and a much need drink on the sun terrace to recap and watch the rest of the lads beaming like beacons in the midday sun.
Group 2 - Craig Evans, Phil Williams and Steve Bradshaw
Craig battled hard but as has been the case over the last few weeks, his driver wasn't "on song" and this seemed to have a detrimental effect on his all round game. As he let the negativity consume him and his sulking spread the bad vibes onto his chipping and wedge play.
Steve was good off the tee with some lovely drives and would have scored well throughout had his second shots not been as erratic as they were. Off a low handicap, you can't afford to have so many wayward shots if you want to challenge for the prizes and although it was a decent round with some sprinkles of good play, Steve will know he is capable of so much more. He did score impressively on the par 3's, which was rewarded by winning the mini competition on them.
Phil started scrappily but managed to score OK by scrambling and fighting for points here and there. He putted well throughout his round but unfortunately this deserted him on 16, 17 and 18 as he missed putts that would have given him 3 easy points and this prevented him from finishing in contention.
Group 3 - Steve Evans, Andy Sullivan and Kevin Murphy
First up was Andy who hit a good drive down the first was on the green in reg then 2 putted for par, solid start. This continued as he was 1 under stood on the 4 but a bad bounce from his second shot into the green sent the ball o.b. He still managed a 5 which shows why he plays off 7! Andy played some great golf; very consistent tee to green, and his score could of been so much better if it wasn't for a short putt he missed on a par 5 for par which he followed up with a lost ball on the next! He battled extremely well on the back nine and came in with 33 points a very good score of such a low handicap.
Next up was Kev Murphy, he did start the round too bad but some poor course management cost him alot of points. In his words he didnt know where the ball was going to go this was summed up on a par 5 on the back nine, a 330-350 yard drive down the middle to leave a mere 135 in....comes off with a 6! This will definitely be a round to forget as his head went down on the back nine resulting in poor scoring. Well deserved losers crown for Kevin.
Steve Evo was last up, Steve probably hit his worst drive all day on the first which went right into the trees, every other time he hit the bigstick he striped it down the middle! Steve came in with 28 points which is surprising as he played alot better then the score suggested the best of his round was on the 9th great drive down the middle great iron shot in and duly rolled in the birdie putt. If it wasnt for a couple of bad shots on the back nine which at one point we thought there was a woodpecker on the 18th hole due to the trees he had hit! Im sure he would have came in with a mid 30 point round.
Group 4 - Darren Mason, Andy Roper, Chris Parrish and Stu Seddon
During the round, if you would have asked any of the 4 players in this group how they were playing – all four of them wouldn’t have been overly happy and would have been critical of a few issues in their game. However, in reflection and looking at the finishing table as a guide, the group has played some very steady golf and come in with solid scored.
Darren stood on the 1st, claiming that he’s “normally allowed to play off 11” and then proceeded to produce a consistent 18 holes that saw him rock in with 31 points. If it wasn’t for a couple of solid ‘clunks’ as his ball struck tress then he would have found himself right in contention for the top spots. Nevertheless, winner of the nearest the pin in 2 shots shows it was too shoddy a round.
Andy had a funny old round. Anything from a tee box was wayward and left him with lots of work to do on too many occasions. Driving through fairways, wrong club selections and a wicked hook on several drives meant that he had to chop the ball down the fairway and couldn’t attack the greens. His 3rd shots were generally where his 2nd shots SHOULD have been from and this meant that he was playing bogey golf all day. A few lip out putts didn’t help build confidence either but a steady 31 points of his new 3 shot lower handicap.
Chris was as steady as ever and plotted his way around the course well. He was the most consistent from the tee with several lovely drives landing in prime position and his work around the greens on the whole was solid. However, as with the rest of the group, he didn’t convert the putts that would have put him in contention with the prize places and he can simply take away that it was another solid round of golf on a tough course.
Stu, oh Stu… He was very critical of parts of his game on the day, but credit to him he managed to fight and battle and put together a decent score. He felt at the time that he wasn’t giving himself a chance to score well and this was right, but his wedge play was absolutely majestic – some may say sexual! Time after time he teased the ball within inches of the cup and one putted when the previous 2/3 shots on the hole were like watching a one armed man wrestle a snake in a phone box. If the longer clubs worked on the day, Stu would have romped this – no doubts!
Group 5 - Rob Botterill, Dave Ashely, Lee Carroll and Alan O'Donoghue
Next out was the four-ball made up by seasoned campaigner and bookies favourite, Dave Ashley accompanied by three players making their first appearance of the season, Alan O'Donoghue, Lee Carroll and Rob Botterill.
With three of the group getting off to pretty solid starts it was Lee who began particularly well converting some excellent fairway-splitting long drives into good scores on the first three or four holes. Sadly Lee's laser like accuracy off the tee temporarily deserted him as the round continued, causing him to finish his front nine with several disappointing "blobs" spoiling what could have been a very impressive, high scoring nine holes.
Meanwhile The other members of the group were putting together an impressive run of holes with Dave top scoring and finishing the front nine with a creditable 18 points. The bookies looked at this stage to have got their pre-event predictions spot on!
The round continued with all players scoring well at times but with each lacking the consistency to compile a winning score. There were a number of excellent birdies from Alan, Dave and Lee, but it was Rob who racked up the top score on the back nine making full use of his 27 shots to score particularly heavily on those holes which offered him the comfort of two shots! To his credit Rob kept the ball in play off the tee and putted exceptionally well on the superb slick and often undulating greens.
The group gelled well and were comfortable in each other's company. Conversation was easy and it was pleasing also to see players giving recognition of opponents' good shots and offering encouragement to one another throughout the round when calamity struck!
Group 6 - Brendan Smith, Ste Holmes, Tony King and Paul Davies JNR
After his pre round knock the during the week Paul Davies JNR played with real confidence and he secured a third place finish with some great shots both off the tee and onto the green. Tony King was solid for most of the round and only a run of 2 or 3 holes where he lost his way a bit he could of been fighting for a top 3 finish.
Brendan hit the ball as good as anyone off the tee. He constantly hit his driver well leaving him in some great positions to take advantage of his extra shots. Unfortunately he couldn't capitalise and left him frustrated.
Ste got his excuse in early of having no sleep but all in all he had a good knock. 3 off the tee on too many holes ruined a good round but he had to be happy with the points scored with no sleep.
Group 7 - Paul Davies SNR, John Standley, Kev Givnan and Allan Gannon
All four got off to a good start with Kev Givnan driving nicely coupled with some great approach play; clearly the lessons are paying off! Paul Davies was also playing quite well until “The BIG stick” came out and he was wafting at balls like a fly swatter in mosquito season!
Likewise John was struggling at keeping his drives on the shorter grass and Allan was battling with his first round in a number of months. The winter off not doing Gannon any favours as he tried to remind his body how it should manouvre through a golf swing.
A monster 35ft putt on the 1st par 3 by John looked to put him in pole position for the mini tournament.... obviously until the 8th hole when all parties were in discussions regarding choice of what iron to use due facing a firm breeze into their faces.
Kev went with a 6 iron....The rest is history!
A perfect draw slightly right of the pin, with a great shape, it had “pin seeker” all over it. With one bounce and a little roll it was in! HOLE-IN-ONE. His second in 7 months.
At least we got a smile out of Kev and with a nice birdie on the next for it seemed like everything falling into place until a few ill judged club selections were made which sent shots through a couple of greens. However, it was a solid round that saw him take the blue jacket with 37 points. On a course that was as tricky as this, every credit has to go for him for a superb knock.
With no 1 pointers on John's card up until around the 12th, albeit a couple of blobs, he was playing quite well and had his driving not let him down on a few occasions he would have been right up there.
Paul played fairly consistently throughout with a few close putts missing the hole entirely to dampen his spirits
After battling his way around the course, Allan came to the 18th tee on 21pts knowing the salmon pink shirt was calling and after a slightly pulled tee shot he was faced with over hanging branches blocking a normal shot into the green. 149yds to the pin, he took a 5iron back of the stance and stung it under the branches to about 20ft of the pin, two putts later and he was in a for a miracle par taking him to 24pts and “The Great Escape” was confirmed on reaching the clubhouse.
The course is tucked away off the main roads and would be easily missed if it wasn't for one sign that lets you know you are close. On arrival, you are greeted by a grand looking club house and everything looks in tip top shape. From the pro shop to the bar area, things here are just done properly.

the venue
Dunham Forest was a course that the committee have "test run" during the close season - and so impressed were we with it [despite it being some pretty poor winter conditions] - we have put it up as the venue for our first Major event of the season.
This stunning 18 hole championship course was designed by John Bealey and modified by ex-Ryder Cup player and top international course designer Dave Thomas to follow the picturesque contours of the natural landscape. He achieved this so successfully that today the Club is proud to be considered one of the most beautiful parkland courses in the UK.
The course is cut into the landscape beautifully and each hole is entirely different from the last with some absolutely stunning holes that stick in the mind after the round. The greens are as smooth and slick as any you are likely to have the privilege of playing on and the course is always in immaculate condition, regardless of the conditions in days prior. With a superb sand base the course drains exceptionally well, making this a true 'all year round' track.

With a superb sand base the course drains exceptionally well, making this a true 'all year round' track.

directions
Dunham Forest is in Altrincham, Cheshire and can be accessed from the M56. It is 35-40 minutes from Skelmersdale and Liverpool.
*** PLEASE NOTE *** Sat Navs tend to try and send you on a very rural, single track road as you approach the club. You need approach from Junction 7 of the M56 to avoid this being the case, rather than coming off the M6 onto A and B roads. Its not a problem, its just a very annoying road!!!
The full address for Sat Navs is:
Dunham Forest GC, Oldfield Lane, Altrincham, Cheshire, WA14 4TY
