Marriott Worsley Park, Manchester
Bunkers presents "The Bunkers Invitational"
Sunday 4th august 2013
THIS EVENT WAS WON BY:
PAUL DAVIES JNR
WINNER - PAUL DAVIES JNRThe 2013 Bunkers Invitational was won on 4th August by Paul Davies Jnr.
Winner of the annual trophy and title holder for the next 12 months, Paul had a superb round of 41 stableford points and scored consistently throughout with some great short game work and solid striking. A sprinkling of Birdies and Pars helped Paul walk away with the annual trophy and a Titleist pencil bag but the biggest prize was the abundance of respect and admiration from his peers. This brought Paul the most pleasure and pride as you can see by his beeming smile! ha. CONGRATULATIONS on a superb victory. We hope Paul can return next season to defend his title. |
review of the day is below the finishing table
strength in numbers...
After what felt like a considerable break from Bunkers events, we made our way to the Marriott resort of Worsley Park in Manchester. The Bunkers Invitational was an opportunity for members to bring along guests to see what the society was all about and it enabled them to have the opportunity to walk away with the title and prizes on offer. Our members responded superbly and we had our best turnout since we started with 22 players taking part in total. Many thanks to members who brought guests along and we hope they enjoyed the day and the Bunkers experience.
Having played our last "proper"event in mid June [excluding Rainford as it was more of an admin experience to finalise our memberships] it seemed like an age since all the lads were together and the mickey taking was in full swing as a result. The summer had been one of the hottest and sunniest in recent memory. However, the golfing Gods didn't want us to have a slice of that particular pie and the forecasts were pretty grim with rain being a guarantee. That said, we touched lucky on the day, and although we had a downpour for 3/4 holes, it stayed reasonably dry with the odd light sprinkling of rain.
The new Bunkers "Champions" shirt was making its debut at Worsley. The shirt was kindly donated and sponsored by Clakes Golf Centre and is to be worn by the winner of our previous event [in a kind of Tour de France - yellow jersey style - to highlight who is the reigning champion]. The shirts colour raised some eyebrows, but it was chosen to stand out, and on this occassion it was handed to Phil Williams following his victory at Rainford in late June.
The afternoon went well and scoring across the board was as strong as we have seen at any event, with 14 out of the 22 players scoring 30 points or more. The course was in immaculate condition with well manicured greens and fringes and the fairways were lush and tidy with well kept 1st cut rough. The greens were reasonably slick but with punishing undulations and provided a stern test of a players ability to read breaks. The venue itself was as good as the course and the food both pre and post round went down a storm. The only slight let down was that we were in a busy bar/bistro area with lots of background noise from music and other players and this made our post round presentations a bit difficult. That said, I think a great day was had by all.
Chris Berry and Daz Rogerson set us off with an early two-ball and although Chris scored well and consistently, Daz had a tough round and a bad start continued throughout the round.
Marc Lloyd took up his usual position of teeing the main group off first. However, after a couple of great opening shots at the last couple of events, Lloydy had a stinker on the first pushing his first one into the tree and his follow up faded in much the same manner. Marc's round was up and down with some good putting but shots lost hand over fist in the sand and too many 'blobs' on his card. Keith Malone had a good round and his strongest yet with good scoring which came as a result of some tidy work around the greens. Guests Ant Holland and Keiran Murphy played steadily to finish on 25 points a piece.
Group 2 saw guest Carl Fletcher post a solid round of 32 with some good shots and just a bit of disappointment of what could have been had a few putts dropped in. Rob Botterill continued his steady immprovement and was as consistent as usual in keeping the ball on the fairway. Just a few points lost due to bunker play and a couple of shots into the drink on par 3's. Dave Ashley was solid throughout and produced a wonderful shot on the par 3 4th to take the first nearest the pin, having left his ball only 3/4 feet from the pin. Phil was strong off the tee but his new bats seem to be taking a bit of adapting and distance issues saw him drop shots on the approach to the greens. Four 7's on the card took away his chances of walking away with the trophy.
Group 3 can best be descried as the tale of two halves. Both Craig Evans and Andy Roper scored poorly and squandered points on the front 9, but then turned it around to post 20+ points on the way back in. Peter Woolley had a great front 9 and let it slip on the return 9 and came away feeling like he had had to scramble for points after a strong start. Allan Gunn had a round he mus be delighted with. Lots of net birdies and consistent scoring throughout saw him finish on 36 points and level par for his handicap.
Kev Givnan must be thinking "what do I have to do to win an event?". He was 3 over gross on the front 9 and produced some wonderful golf throughout but came up just short again to finish 2nd overall on 37 points. Ste Holmes talked up a big performance and despite a few good shots was a touch wasteful around the greens and came up just short. Guests Kev Murphy and Mark Gaskell both had good rounds with Mark finishing on 35 points and taking longest drive and nearest the pin in 2 awards.
The final group saw the highest scoring averages and the event winner. Paul Davies with guests consisting of his Son, Paul Davies, John Morrison and Collin Weston all put in solid performances with some wonderful golf tinged with a sprinkling of disappointment at a couple of wasteful shots that prevented even better scoring. Paul Davies Jnr eventually taking the crown with a superb knock of 41 points and some great scoring throughout with plenty of birdies and pars on his card. Congratulations.
So....excluding guests we had to move to the next in line member to see who would be wearing the "loser" t-shirt and taking their place on the WALL OF SHAME - and this fell to Marc Lloyd and his famous red shirt. Unlucky Lloydy lad.
The champions shirt will be worn by Kev Givnan at our next event at Poal on 11th August.
